The All New Adventures Of Us - Best Loved Goodnight Tales

This year has been a magical music one for me, it seems that every few months that pass has me discovering another band that I quickly take to my heart and love what they do, what they are about and more importantly they then deliver an album that meets up to those expectations.

The latest in a long line is The All New Adventures Of Us, a group that seem to be getting better and better all the time, culminating in the recent single 45 Forever, a song that seems to be about finding solace in music, immersing yourself in your records no matter what else is going on in your life, at least it says that to me.

While I might not have any strife in my life presently, it doesn’t stop the message from hitting home to me though. I agree with it completely and it’s why I love music. No matter what your mood, your circumstances, your environment and anything else that can effect you, there is music out there that fits the occasion perfectly.

Although not every lyric is upbeat in it’s message or as uplifting in spirit, they are lyrics that you can easily associate with, take album opener A Good Liar Is A Good Storyteller, which contains some brilliant advice ”...cus this is give and take, just don’t forget the former”, or next single Firetruck (Doki Doki) that observes how things are changing with technology ”...because no one writes real letters anymore”, how true is that!

They aren’t all about the lyrics though either, musically they sound like The Magic Numbers, Belle And Sebastian and Los Campesinos! have all been put in the wash together, resulting in a tie-dyed t-shirt of sound compared to most bands one colour blandness. In fact on “Me, Me, Me”, Said The Kite-Eating Tree; As He Took Breakfast From Little Katy when the horns and the “ba ba ba badda da da” vocals come in you could be forgiven for thinking that it was Los Campesinos! themself, especially with the overblown if still amusing title.

Elsewhere on Best Loved Goodnight Tales you get some real highlights in the afore mentioned 45 Forever, the slow track The Art Of The High Five that builds to a harmonious close, the mournful strings of Loftets Grand / New Year Outro and Perfectly Imperfect which is a really beautiful track. If you are looking for disappointment then the only one that was a bit flat for me was The Wide-Eyed Led Us Home, I get the feeling though that even that one will grow on me.

Have your say...
