The Motorettes - Metro Club, London
So, it’s another gig at the Metro club…not my favourite place in the world, but it does the job. I’m here to see The Motorettes. They are a 3 piece Geordie band from Tynemouth and are made up of Robin Howe (guitar and vocals), Jed Laidlaw (bass and vocals) and Jack Laidlaw (drums). The supporting bands i’ve seen so far are pretty good so I hold high hopes for The Motorettes when they take to the stage.
They start to play and apart from one of the guitarists wiggling around looking a bit like he needs the toilet, which is slightly distracting, they look and sound like a typical indie rock band with a clear American influence. The Ramones and Blink 182 come to mind. The first song starts with a brusque acappella intro which starts me wondering what the song will amount too and then when it kicks in I’m instantly taken with its frenzied energy, staccato vocals and vigorous guitar chords which drive the song along. From that point onwards the songs are pretty much all of the same style give or take a few slow songs which the band don’t seem to feel totally comfortable performing. What is interesting about their style of music is that it is catchy from the outset. It doesn’t take a few listens to get hooked; its repetitiveness ensures it only takes a few minutes.
My favourite song of the night is Go Go Gadget Girl as I love the way the vocals weave in and around each other. If you were listening to this song on CD for the first time I could see how you might think to take the cd out at times to look for scratches. It has that sort of stop-start feel. Super Heartbeats is also a blinder and Relax It’s The 80’s which is a real feel good pop tune makes me think of summer days. All the songs seem to be very well written and The Motorettes definitely know how to get you hooked on their melodies.

Add to favouritesOne thing I would say is that other than the band on stage, it’s the people who help to make a gig good, however on this occasion they didn’t really. It being a secret gig and all, close friends and family meant not many people and not much atmosphere. As for the band, I can take them or leave them. Some of the songs I enjoyed and I can definitely see the potential for a few good hits and better songs to come but at times I felt slightly bored as the songs seemed to blur into one big noise. The Motorettes are a no fuss type of band, they just want to play rock and they do. This is definitely a band aiming at a teenage fan base. Their music is fun and full of energy and if you put that together with some killer pop melodies you can’t really go wrong.
The Motorettes have just covered Kids In America as part of the TT Remastered series which can be found on the website (added by Editor).
