The Rapture - Pieces Of The People We Love
A few years back around the time that The Strokes were at the very top of their game and James Murphy was lauding over everybody with a clutch of sporadic yet brilliant single releases, New York was very clearly top of the musical pile for a while sound wise.
Also out and about at that time was a group called The Rapture, they released a couple of blinding singles in the shape of House Of Jealous Lovers and Sister Saviour and they also dropped the album Echoes. The album was something of a disappointment for me, they’d hinted at greatness with the singles but come up a little short on the album. It’s not that it was bad, the problem was more to do with the fact it sounded so disjointed at times and wasn’t a cohesive listen.
Time has moved on since then of course and the musical land is far less welcoming to all things from New York as it was then. The Strokes have been mauled for their two follow up albums to Is This It? (they must regret that album title now) and James Murphy has seen mixed reactions to the LCD Soundsystem long player. So where does this leave The Rapture, have they moved on?
Thankfully they have, they’ve come back with a killer single that is gauranteed to be one of the first songs going into my record box now with Get Myself Into It but more importantly they’ve learnt from their mistakes on Pieces Of The People We Love. This is a far more polished and flowing album to listen to from the first to the last track.

Add to favouritesA lot of it is still aimed towards the dance floor, but thought has been given to how they will fit the album together and for me the only track that doesn’t work is the slightly lack lustre First Gear which ironically they never seem to get out of on this track.
The rest of it though is a sheer delight from the party groove of Whoo! Alright – Yeah… Uh Huh which has got to be the most radio DJ unfriendly title ever, to the fuzzbox of sound that is The Sound and the closing beauty of Live In Sunshine. This is one NY act that seem determined to improve as they go along and i’ll be quite happy to go along for the ride.
