The Rifles - The Faversham, Leeds
I have, it has to be said always tried to live a fairly rock n roll lifestyle as much as possible. It’s only what I would expect of a magazine editor on a music paper, so it’s only fair that as a self appointed one I follow my own rules.
Now this excess has in the past involved several gigs in several days with alcohol consumed at all of these events. Never before though have I attempted two gigs on the same night in the same city, which is exactly how this evening panned out.
I’d been offered some free tickets to see up and coming band The Rifles play at The Faversham in Leeds which I gleefully accepted (free gig in Leeds on a Saturday night…yeah it’s a no brainer). As it was a plus one, I needed to find someone else who fancied a gig that night.
Step forward Mr Graham Cookson (you might remember him from such reviews as The Doves, Manchester vs Cancer and Weezer!!). He was up for it but with a slight spanner to fix firmly into the wheel, “yeah mate that sounds good, only problem is I’m going to see a band at The Vine that night, it’s a girl from work and I said I’d go see them they are due on at eight”.
Not a problem thinks I, surely a short forty minute set, a brisk walk up the Fav and we’ll be there to see the second support band. So off we went to check out not one but two gigs in the fair city of Leeds.
Things started to get complicated when Rubber’s set got put back and they weren’t gonna be on until about nine. I was a touch twitchy but they seemed decent people so I thought I’d miss the support at the other gig and get there in time for The Rifles.
Fortune though sometimes does favour the brave. I saw a superb set by Rubber and then we managed to flag down a taxi and get dropped off in double quick time up at the Faversham. A friendly barman inside directed us to a less busy bar and really long pint glass in hand we made it to the back of the venue just as The Rifles were coming on stage….
….or so we thought.

Add to favouritesThe band came on, played a really tight set, good vocals clever lyrics and spiky music in a similar vein to flavour of the month the Arctic Monkeys, the crowd were loving it (even had a small mosh pit at the front which you don’t see that often in this venue) and I could have quite happily watched them for longer than they were on.
Its getting towards half ten and Rubber join us for a few drinks in an after show stylee when suddenly on stage a group appears. Three or four songs in we aren’t bowled over by them in quite the same way. It all sounds a bit too similar to far too many other bands that are around at the moment with punky / new wave tendencies. Only after we’ve seen a full set and had a quick word with the sound TYPEer do we realise what has just happened (the alcohol didn’t help ok). The first band on were actually Milburn and the disappointing surprise last act were The Rifles.
They may have had plenty of energy but on this evidence they need some heavier artillery (sorry couldn’t resist) if they are going to stand out from the crowd.
